My Go-To Scone Recipe

Scones

Let's go straight to the recipe that will change your scone game for the better. Here's what you'll need:

  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 cup of unsalted butter (1 stick), cubed and chilled
  • 1/2 cup of buttermilk, plus 1 tablespoon for brushing
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract
  • Add-ins of your choice (chocolate chips, fruit, nuts, etc.)

Now that you know what you're working with, here are the steps:

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a mixing bowl.
  3. Add the cold butter and use a pastry cutter or fork to combine and create small crumbs.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, and vanilla extract.
  5. Pour the buttermilk mixture into the flour mixture and stir until just combined.
  6. Add your choice of add-ins and mix until evenly distributed.
  7. Gently knead and shape the dough into a round disk about 1-inch thick.
  8. Cut the disk into 8 equal pieces and transfer them to the prepared baking sheet.
  9. Brush the tops with buttermilk and bake for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  10. Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature and enjoy!

This recipe is foolproof, and you can make so many variations by simply changing the add-ins. Here are some of my favorite combinations:

  • Blueberry and lemon zest
  • Cheddar and chive
  • Pumpkin and cinnamon
  • Chocolate chip and sea salt

The possibilities are endless, and I can guarantee that you will impress your friends and family with these delicious scones.
